The history of a challenge coin (medallion) is unique and dates back to the Roman Empire, however, it was adopted throughout the United States Military and Law Enforcement for recognition and awards, establish membership, and of course, the “Challenge.” This has been modernized to become a collector’s piece for those who enjoy the tradition.
The Challenge legend has been told since WWI, where a challenger would ask to see a holder’s medallion, if the challenged could not produce a medallion, they would be required to buy a drink of choice to the member who challenged them. If the challenged member produced a medallion, then the challenging member was required to pay for the drink.
